In 1898, Sadie Danley longs for a place to belong. Orphaned as a child, she spent years in Florence Hannigan’s Children’s Home, watching others find families while she was left behind. The only bright spot was Elijah Brownstone, the wealthy boy who once promised her forever with a paper heart—until his mother chose another girl to adopt instead. Now, with nowhere else to go, Sadie follows Florence to the small town of Rocky Corners, Missouri, hoping for a fresh start as a schoolteacher.

Growing up in a home filled with his parents’ constant bickering, he vowed to remain unattached, dedicating himself to his work as a traveling doctor.
